Thailand’s flair delights Ikeda

Chiang Mai: Head coach Futoshi Ikeda praised his players’ composure after Thailand recorded a dominant 7-0 victory over Iraq in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Qualifiers Group B clash on Sunday.

The win means Thailand are level on six points with India at the top of the group, marking another confident outing for Ikeda’s side as they chase a place in the Finals.

"After the first game, we had only two days to recover and prepare again. We focused on helping the players recover physically and get ready for the match against Iraq,” Ikeda said.

“Everyone performed well. There were quite a few changes, but we stuck to our playing style, which we've consistently executed well – and the players responded accordingly."

One of the standout performers was debutant Wirunya Kwenkasikum, who struck twice in a confident showing with Ikeda praising the youngster’s matured showing.

"Wirunya played well on the field and managed to score. This is likely a game she’ll remember for a long time. We have four matches in a row, so we have to stay focused and take things one game at a time.”

Looking ahead, Ikeda emphasised the importance of maintaining physical readiness as Thailand prepare to face Mongolia on Wednesday with their sights set firmly on topping the group.

"I'm not too concerned about the team’s structure, but I do want to make sure the players stay in the best possible physical condition. I’m working closely with our medical team and physiologists.

“Our goal is to finish top of the group to qualify for the next round. Both the players and staff share that same ambition – to win the group. The next match is against Mongolia and we will fight together. I hope everyone will continue to cheer us on."
