Vietnam’s Mai attributes progress to tactical discipline

Viet Tri: Head coach Mai Duc Chung was full of praise for Vietnam’s tactical discipline after the Southeast Asian side booked their place at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ with a commanding 4-0 victory over Guam on Saturday.

The win meant a 10th successive appearance at the Finals, with Vietnam topping Group E of the Qualifiers with a perfect nine points.

“Guam had superior physique and physical strength, but we played cohesively, using small-group play instead of long balls. We stuck to our tactics and scored well-deserved goals.” said Mai. “I am also very happy because the fans in Phu Tho cheered for us enthusiastically.

“Football always has surprises, but deep in our hearts, we all have the hope of playing at the World Cup. I hope the players continue to work hard, improve each day and make a breakthrough."

“For this round of qualifying, some Ho Chi Minh City players joined the team late after playing in the AFC Women’s Champions League, while our U20 players couldn’t attend as they are preparing for the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

“Hopefully in the next training camp, we’ll have a more complete squad and better readiness – especially in finishing.”

Midfielder Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, who scored a brace against Guam, echoed Mai’s sentiments adding that the team showed the right mindset to meet their target.

“We tried our best to achieve our goal of qualifying for the Finals. Guam were not easy opponents, but the whole team played with focus and determination. This result is a motivation for us to continue to aim for higher goals.”
